Director of Business Development - North America

The opportunity:

Founded in 2016, UBike China quickly became one of the world’s leading bike sharing platforms. After its success in China, UBike's NA extension, U-bicycle North America was established in August of 2017 in Vancouver, British Columbia. To date, we have entered more than 20 cities including Victoria, BC and have over 55,000 bikes deployed globally.

We aim to revolutionize mobility in cities and campuses by empowering global citizens with a greener, more efficient, and more affordable mode of transportation. Our U-Bicycles are enabled with GPS, wireless technology, and self-activating locks, allowing us to deliver convenient and enjoyable services to our customers.

We are a growing company that values autonomy, performance, and potential and we are currently looking for another member to join the team in this rewarding experience. The Director of Business Development, North America is an important role in assessing and securing future expansion locations. Key responsibilities will be around expanding U-bicycle to new cities (& other host locations) throughout North America, overseeing City Operations Managers who are the face of U-Bicycle and managing partner relationships.

The Director of Business Development, North America reports to the Vice President and has responsibility for all the current and future City Operations Managers. They work closely with the Director of Marketing and Director of Operations. This role can work from the Richmond, downtown Vancouver or Victoria offices (or home) and has about 20-30% travel requirements (in blocks of time when a new location is joining).

Key responsibilities:

The Business Development Director is responsible for:

  • Researching and assessing which locations are best for expanding U-bicycle to. These locations could be cities, university/college campuses, hotel chains, gyms, etc. – places with large groups of people and an ecosystem of support; be creative.
  • Developing strategies to approach locations, identity decision makers, secure their partnership and negotiate terms of the agreement
  • Developing prospecting criteria, sales processes, account management methods
  • Fostering the support of the local eco-system (e.g. bike culture, bike lanes, etc.)
  • Working with marketing and operations teams to execute on the plan (how many bikes, where, special issues, etc.) you and the host location have agreed to
  • Working with human resources to recruit, train, coach and develop your team which consist of a City Operations Manager per city. They lead customer service and are the face of U-bicycle on your behalf.
  • Developing and implementing a city operations training and onboarding program to educate and upskill your team as we expand to new cities and implement new technologies
  • Managing existing partnerships including inform current and potential location partners about key business developments
  • Contributing to the senior leadership team including supporting other teams and leaders

You provide:

  • A highly-motivated, self-starting, nimble and positive character that leads by example
  • Strong team leadership including recruitment, engagement, training and performance management
  • Ability to effectively work with and support remote team members in multiple countries and time zones
  • Proven success with B2G and navigating government planning, procurement and regulations
  • Accomplished in securing and servicing large corporate accounts
  • Experience working with a rapidly growing company including tech and/or franchises
  • Experience (work, live, travel) with multiple cities across North America to understand the human geography nuances
  • Proficiency in developing and achieving KPIs and sale processes for self and team
  • Ability to pick-up new technologies from WeChat and Microsoft Office to CRM and presentation tools
  • Post-secondary education in a related field a preference or a combination of education and experience
  • Strong English written and verbal communication required
  • Simplified Chinese / Mandarin written and verbal communication a bonus
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Must be legally eligible to travel for business meetings to the USA

Human Resources Manager - Canada and USA

The Human Resources Manager for Canada & USA is an important role as we are rapidly growing and want to have a performance based, highly engaging workplace. Key responsibilities will be around recruiting and developing and deploying policies and programs.

The Human Resources Manager reports to the Vice President and has responsibility for the Bookkeeper and other future HR team members. This role is ideally based at the Richmond office with the core team but can also work from the downtown Vancouver or Victoria offices (or home) and has minimal travel requirements.

Key responsibilities:

The HR Manager is responsible for:

  • Leading our workforce planning and recruitment strategy including developing the role descriptions and finding the right talent at the right time
  • Full-cycle recruiting for multiple roles for our head office and technical development team in British Columbia (located in Vancouver, Richmond and Victoria) and various operational and marketing roles in expansion cities throughout Canada and the United States
  • Build relationships in the local community to showcase U-bicycle as an excellent company to work for, with and rent bikes from
  • Developing a comprehensive onboarding program to the company and working with individual managers for team specific needs
  • Developing training and performance management best practices, then coach managers on implementing them with their teams. This includes career development chats, KPIs/goals and team training and education budgets.
  • Developing and implementing overall employee related policies that balance legal obligations with best practices to have an engaging, employee friendly work environment
  • Work with management to create events and programs that enhance the workplace
  • Accountable for Payroll and HR admin, managed through the Bookkeeper

You provide:

  • A highly-motivated, self-starting, nimble and positive character that leads by example

  • Experience working across multiple jurisdictions: BC, Canada and USA preferred
  • Experience working with a rapidly growing company including tech and/or franchises
  • Experience successfully influencing and coaching managers
  • Ability to pick-up and implement new technologies from WeChat and Microsoft Office to employee self-serve HRIS and ATS software
  • CPHR ideal and SHRM-CP a bonus
  • Post-secondary education in a related field a preference or a combination of education and experience
  • Strong English written and verbal communication required
  • Simplified Chinese / Mandarin written and verbal communication preferred
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Must be legally eligible to travel for business meetings to the USA
